I noticed a piece by Robert Reich in the Brit Guardian titled “The modern Republican party is hurtling towards fascism” and thought I oughta check it out. What is his problem, I thought.
One: The two black Democrats expelled from the Tennessee legislature.
The two were not accused of criminal wrongdoing or even immoral conduct…
They were technically in violation of house rules, but the state legislature has never imposed so severe a penalty for rules violations.
Honey, they were using a bullhorn on the floor of the TN state house to gin up “activists” in the gallery.
What would you say, Robert Reich, if Marjorie Taylor Greene used a bullhorn on the floor of the US House to gin up a crowd of Proud Boys in the gallery? Would you murmur “armed insurrection” to your Guardianista pals, or just say girls will be boys?
Two: Wisconsin, where a liberal woman has been elected to the State Supreme Court while the State Senate remains Republican and has the power to impeach state judges.
[T]his could be done without any necessity for a public justification. Under Republican authoritarianism, power is its own justification.
Hey, Robert Reich. And what do you call the six year Democratic Get Trump campaign?
Three: Florida where a GOP supermajority has given Ron DeSantis
unbridled control – with total authority over the board governing Disney [on]… his anti-LGBTQ “don’t say gay” law; permission to fly migrants from anywhere in the US to destinations of his own choosing, for political purposes… and unprecedented prosecutorial power… pursuing supposed cases of voter fraud.
Oh no! Pursuing “supposed cases of voter fraud!”
Thus, Reich sums up,
Donald Trump is not singularly responsible for this dangerous trend, but he has legitimized and encouraged the ends-justify-the-means viciousness now pushing the GOP toward becoming the American fascist party.
It makes me wonder. Is this piece intended
To rile up the partisans and toss them some red meat?
To tell us what Robert Reich really believes about politics in 2023?
To keep Robert Reich’s name in the public square as a good loyal Democrat?
Because, Robert Reich, if you are not prepared to do a bit of “one the one hand, this, and on the other hand, that” what are you but a fascist street brawler?
It takes one to know one.
