Hanson on the New Nihilists
no, they just can't believe that all their ideas are failing them
Victor David Hanson has a piece that is accusing our liberal friends of being nihilists. As in, the Border. As in rampant crime. As in climate change.
It is easy to believe this.
What sensible person would annihilate the border? The whole point of apes, from chimpanzees to humans, is that we have our territory, and we fight anyone that violates the border of the territory.
And what sensible person would demolish the justice system? The whole point of the justice system, from cops to judges to prisons, is simply to stop evil people that prey on other people in our cites and neighborhoods.
Fighting against enemies, foreign and domestic, is the ugly, but necessary job of government.
So why don’t our liberal friends want to defend the border or our streets?
Because their religion, their faith, is that our forebears were white racists and colonizers that oppressed people for centuries across the world. The time has come to fight for the Oppressed Peoples against the White Oppressors.
They are not nihilists: they care, deeply.
Douglas Adams, in his momentous Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy had his characters program a big computer to ponder the meaning of Life, The Universe, Everything.
And the answer was 42. That’s a joke, son.
But the point is important. We humans act as though our lives have purpose. But what purpose? The answer is: we don't know.
But that never stopped anyone. Clearly, the enemies at the border are a problem. Back in the day the Goths were upset about the Huns at the border of their territory in eastern Europe just outside the Roman Empire. So they asked the Romans if they could move inside the border of the Roman Empire and have the Roman Army protect them. But what if the Romans had said that the Huns were helpless victims, and shut-up you Goths?
And humans have always worried about the End of the World. Believe me, climate change is nothing new on the End of the World front.
And notice that our liberal friends are still doing straight up politics. Sure, we are not to worry about border-crossers. But there is still an enemy: armed insurrectionists and racists and homopohobes mis-genderers.
For sure, we are not to worry about shop-lifters. But, ooh boy, that Trump and his undervaluation of his real-estate properties!
No, our liberal friends are not nihilists. They care deeply.
But what if they are wrong? What if their rule of the last 100 years is about the most unjust regime in history? What if everything they have done over the last 100 years has Made Things Worse?
I know, it is too horrible to think about.
