Let’s think of two narratives about the Democrats’ pursuit of Donald Trump.
On the one hand there are those that say that it’s a brilliant play to get Trump the GOP nomination for president again — so that he gets defeated, again, in the general election.
On the other hand there are those that say that using the criminal justice system to harass a major opposition political figure cannot end well.
Then there is my notion that when the ruling class is harassing the opposition it means that the rulers do not sleep soundly in their beds, as they keep hearing the sound of the wolves of the next regime howling behind their troika as it speeds through the snow.
I guess my judgement is that the Dems are all brilliant political tacticians. They can turn a transgender mass murderer into Republicans are Racists in one 24-hour news cycle.
And yes, maybe Dems can rile up women voters into protecting the sacred right of abortion from pro-life fanatics. Myself, I understand the concern of liberal women. When you are expected to “put out,” in the immortal phrase of Streetcar Named Desire character Blanche, you want protection from any unwanted child the sexual revolution has forced upon you.
But the problem is that we are not in Kansas any more. Or more to the point, it’s not 1900 any more, with the educated class dreaming of the glorious society they will legislate with all kinds of rights for workers and women. We’ve implemented just about every idea that has come out of the educated class in the last century, and now we are running out of money to pay for all the pensions and benefits we legislated just at the same time when our betters are telling us that we have to batten down the hatches and put all our resources on an “energy transition” to “tackle” climate change.
Just one little chart, from usgovernmentspending.com.
Do you see what I see? I see the exponential growth in real per-capita income turning into an S-curve. In other words, the future is not so bright that we are gonna have to wear shades. And you chaps propose to put the enormous burden of the energy transition on the ordinary US citizen? Do you really understand what you are proposing, dear ruling-class person?
Here’s what I think. It really doesn’t matter what the brilliant Dem tacticians do. It really doesn’t matter whether Trump wins or loses. It really doesn’t matter what political faction gains the upper hand.
I say that if per-capita real growth really is declining, and that, in 50 years, it may even peter out, I’d say that we have trouble right here in River City and nothing that today’s political actors do is going to make a blind bit of difference.
It’s one thing to fight for a slice of the pie when the pie is getting bigger. It’s a completely different game when the size of the pie stays the same, or even starts to shrink.
The ruling class . . . so filled with vision, but so lacking in common sense.
